A place of quiet retreat for individuals and small groups
Our Facility
The Hermitage Retreat House at St. Anne’s is located in Smithsburg, MD, approximately 70 miles west of both Baltimore, MD. and Washington, DC. Accessible to the tri-state area, it is also about 68 miles south of Harrisburg, PA.
We extend an invitation to individuals from all faith traditions or denominations and from wherever you are in your own spiritual journey who wish to take some time away from the demands of daily living to “Rest” the body, “Refresh” the mind, and “Renew” the spirit.
There are three single guest rooms on the second floor with a shared bath. Each room is simply decorated and includes a desk and an upholstered chair for private study and quiet solitude. The living room, dining room and chapel are open to guests during their visit.
Three simple meals and snack food are provided in the dining room for visiting guests. We have a small refrigerator for bottled water and cold drinks, as well as a hot drink maker. (Guests do not have access to the kitchen. However, we will make every effort to accommodate special dietary requests with advance notice.)
The Hermitage Retreat House is staffed by a Resident Manager who is on site to coordinate the scheduling of retreats and events, welcome and see to the needs of the guests, prepare the meals, and care for the house.
Individual Self-Guided Retreats
The Hermitage Retreat House provides a place for a self-guided retreat experience away from the stresses and demands of daily life. While at the Hermitage, you may wish to read from our collection of books found in any of the common areas, you could nap, relax outside, share a conversation and meals with other guests, or seek the solitude of your own private room.
The Grace Chapel on the first floor of the retreat house is always open for meditation and reflection.
Small Group Meetings and Events
Although our primary focus is maintaining a place for overnight guests on individual retreats, we can also provide a calm, comfortable environment for one day meetings and events.
When you are in the need of a space for planning sessions, group discussions, team building, etc., The Hermitage Retreat House may be the perfect setting. We can comfortably accommodate approximately four to twelve people in our living room/dining room areas, and larger groups in our parish house.

The Hermitage Retreat House is a self-sustaining ministry of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church and a $60 per night donation is expected for individual retreats. We can accept cash, check or money order. (No credit cards)
